Netflix may have found its next movie-to-TV play.

The streamer is developing a ‘Hit Man’ series based on the acclaimed 2024 AGC Studios film starring Glen Powell, sources say. The movie was co-written, produced and led by Powell, with Richard Linklater co-writing, directing and producing.

Powell and Linklater are both on board to executive produce the potential series, which is being written by You’re the Worst creator Stephen Falk. AGC Television and Powell’s BarnStorm Productions are producing.

Executive producers include Falk, Linklater, Powell and BarnStorm’s Dan Cohen, along with AGC’s Stuart Ford, Miguel A. Palos Jr. and Lourdes Diaz. Steve Barnett, Alan Powell, Vicky Patel, Shivani Rawat and Julie Goldstein will co-executive produce.

Netflix is keeping story details quiet for now, but the series is expected to build on the film’s premise. ‘Hit Man’ followed a mild-mannered police contractor — a college professor in the movie — who uses elaborate disguises and fully formed alter egos to pose as a fake assassin, helping expose people trying to hire someone to commit murder.

The identity-shifting setup has echoes of J.J. Abrams’ ABC spy drama Alias, whose heroine regularly went undercover in different personas. Powell is also no stranger to physical transformations, currently using disguises and prosthetics in Hulu’s comedy series ‘Chad Powers.’

AGC Studios first unveiled Hit Man in May 2022, with the film locking in a number of international sales before production began that fall. It went on to premiere at the Venice Film Festival before making its North American debut at Toronto, where Netflix picked up rights in multiple territories, including the U.S. and UK, in a $20 million deal.

Following a limited theatrical release, ‘Hit Man’ landed on Netflix in June 2024 and became a critical favorite. The film also drew awards attention, earning Powell a Golden Globe nomination and landing Powell and Linklater a WGA Award nomination.
