A24’s ‘Backrooms’ has stepped straight into the box office spotlight.

The liminal horror film, directed by first-time feature filmmaker Kane Parsons, scared up a massive $10 million in Thursday night previews alone. That matches the Thursday launch of Five Nights at Freddy’s back in 2023, and if Backrooms keeps following that same path, an opening weekend near $80 million may not be out of reach.

Meanwhile, Curry Barker’s smash-hit ‘Obsession’ is heading into its third weekend, and instead of slowing down, it’s getting stronger. After opening with $17 million, the film jumped to $23 million in its second weekend — the kind of week-to-week growth you almost never see at the box office.

The film has crossed $100 million worldwide, making it only the second horror movie this year, after ‘Scream 7,’ to break that barrier. With ‘Backrooms’ already tearing through its first weekend, it may not be far behind.

The numbers get even wilder. ‘Obsession’ reportedly cost just $750,000 to produce, meaning it has earned more than 125 times its production budget. Focus Features picked up the film for a reported $15 million and backed it with a major marketing push, and the gamble has clearly paid off.

‘Backrooms’ is also looking like a dream investment. Its reported production budget is $10 million, which it essentially matched in one night.

The takeaway? Horror is on fire.

Even more exciting, both Kane Parsons and Curry Barker came up through YouTube, proving that a new generation of self-taught filmmakers is no longer knocking on Hollywood’s door — they’re kicking it open.

And the best part? ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ are not just box office success stories, they’re actually fantastic films that deserve to be seen on the big screen.
