A few buzzy Oscar contenders (including A24’s ‘The Smashing Machine’ and Paramount’s ‘Roofman’) aren’t doing so hot at the box office.

Channing Tatum’s ‘Roofman’ opened with just $8 million, while Dwayne Johnson’s ‘The Smashing Machine’ plunged 70% in its second weekend, grossing $10.1 million.

The big news falls on Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another,’ led by Leonardo DiCaprio, as the film is struggles to earn its $300 million breakeven—though the film will cross $150 million worldwide this weekend. The unconfirmed budget rests between $135-$170 million.

Some studios can absorb the losses. ‘Roofman’ cost just $19 million, so Paramount and Miramax will be fine. But ‘One Battle After Another’ could lose around $100 million, insiders say. Warner Bros. disputes that, citing a strong year overall with more than $4 billion in box office revenue from hits like ‘Sinners,’ ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ and ‘F1.’

For A24, ‘The Smashing Machine’ exposes the risk of going big. After raising funds that valued the company at $3.5 billion, it began backing pricier projects — including ‘Marty Supreme,’ a $60–70 million Timothée Chalamet drama due in December. A24 sold foreign rights on ‘Smashing Machine’ to reduce losses to about $10 million, but overseas partners took the hit.
