Production has officially kicked off on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ in the United Kingdom, with Lucasfilm marking the first day of filming by announcing the full lineup of actors joining the project.

New faces in the galaxy far, far away include Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. The film, directed by Shawn Levy, also stars Ryan Gosling. Previously, Mia Goth and Matt Smith were confirmed to appear as the movie’s villains.

Unlike the Skywalker Saga films, ‘Starfighter’ is designed as a standalone story, not tied to Luke Skywalker, Anakin, or any other legacy characters. However, the timeline remains consistent: the movie is set roughly five years after the events of 2019’s ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’

The breakout casting is young actor Flynn Gray, who landed the career-making role of Gosling’s co-star. The script, written by Jonathan Tropper and closely guarded by Lucasfilm, reportedly follows Gosling’s character as he protects a young charge in a sweeping, galaxy-spanning adventure. Casting the role was a lengthy process, with actors from both the U.S. and the U.K. considered before Gray—whose credits include a guest appearance on ‘Wednesday’ and the Irish crime series ‘Borderline’—was chosen.

Adams is believed to be portraying Gray’s mother, though Lucasfilm has yet to confirm details. The actress previously worked with Levy on ‘Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian’ (2009) and starred in the Levy-produced sci-fi hit ‘Arrival.’

Much of the supporting lineup hails from the U.K. Bird is widely recognized from ‘The Inbetweeners,’ while Westman recently acted opposite Claire Danes in ‘The Essex Serpent.’ Ings is currently featured in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix crime drama ‘The Gentlemen.’ Pierre, meanwhile, is set to headline DC Studios’ upcoming series ‘Lanterns’ and previously broke out in Netflix’s ‘Rebel Ridge.’

Behind the camera, Levy is producing alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen are serving as executive producers.

‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is scheduled to open in theaters on May 28, 2027.
