Tom Holland’s Fred Astaire Biopic Adds Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter

Tom Holland has found his dance partners. Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter have joined Sony’s upcoming Fred Astaire biopic, with Qualley set to play Astaire’s older sister and original stage partner Adele Astaire, while Carpenter will portray his legendary Hollywood collaborator Ginger Rogers. Holland will star as Fred Astaire.
The still-untitled film will be directed by ‘Paddington’ and ‘Wonka’ filmmaker Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Levenson. The story is based on Kathleen Riley’s book ‘The Astaires: Fred & Adele’, putting plenty of focus on the sibling act that made Fred and Adele stars across Broadway and London’s West End long before Fred became a Hollywood icon.
King said the film will explore both Astaire’s famous screen legacy with Rogers and the lesser-known story of Adele, whose dancing was never preserved on film. Qualley’s casting is particularly fitting given her own dance background, while Carpenter returns to acting after focusing heavily on her hugely successful music career in recent years.
Holland is also producing the project alongside Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, Ben Holden and Josh Hyams. Fred Astaire’s daughter Ava Astaire McKenzie is supporting the film, while her son Tyler McKenzie will serve as a consultant and co-producer. Holland has already begun dance rehearsals for the role, previously admitting that preparing to do Astaire justice has brought a mix of excitement and serious nerves.
