James Gunn has confirmed that ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 will play a pivotal role in the DCU’s future, describing it as a “prequel” to the upcoming non-Superman sequel film ‘Man of Tomorrow.’

In a post on Instagram, Gunn said the new season “directly” builds up to ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ which is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Gunn promoted the series as the “Man of Tomorrow Prequel,” further captioning “AKA #Peacemaker Season 2, airing a new episode tonight on @HBOMax at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST.”

When a fan questioned whether ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 could really connect so directly—given that several other DCU titles are slated to premiere beforehand—Gunn responded with a simple clarification: “directly.”

The timeline raises questions, as 2026 will see the releases of ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Lanterns,’ and ‘Clayface’ ahead of ‘Man of Tomorrow.’ Gunn, however, has consistently stressed the season’s importance, with Justice Gang characters from this summer’s ‘Superman’ already confirmed to appear.

Gunn announced ‘Man of Tomorrow’ on social media alongside teaser images, hinting at the next chapter of what he calls the ''Superman Saga.’ He clarified that the title is not ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow,’ but simply ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ while confirming it as part of the same overarching storyline.

Speculation continues about the film’s focus. Early artwork suggests Superman and a Power Armor–equipped Lex Luthor may be forced into a temporary alliance against a larger threat, while continuing their rivalry. The title also suggests the possibility of a broader conflict over who truly embodies the role of ‘Man of Tomorrow.’

The announcement comes on the heels of ‘Superman’’’s strong box office performance. The film has surpassed $600 million globally, becoming the first and likely only superhero release of 2025 to reach that milestone. Most of its revenue has come from North America, a trend Gunn has publicly addressed, offering his views on the film’s domestic appeal.
