Julia Garner is sharing new details about her audition experience for the long-awaited Madonna biopic.
In a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast, hosts Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman asked Garner for an update on the status of the project, which Universal shelved last year, to which the actress replied; “Yeah, I mean, that’s supposed to still happen.”
Garner explained how she secured the coveted role of the Queen of Pop, revealing her deep admiration for the “Vogue” icon, adding that she “grew up listening” to her music.
Although nervous during the audition, the ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ actress relied on channeling Madonna’s confidence. “‘OK, what would Madonna do?’ Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.'”
The current status of the biopic remains uncertain. Originally set to be directed by Madonna herself, the film was shelved by Universal Pictures in 2023. However, after concluding her massive ‘Celebration Tour,’ Madonna revealed on Instagram in 2024 that she was revisiting the script.
Meanwhile, Madonna has another project in the works. Earlier this year, it was announced that the “Material Girl” singer is collaborating with producer-director Shawn Levy on a limited series for Netflix, which is still in early development.
On the podcast, Garner reiterated that the biopic is still moving forward, but cautioned, “But I also feel like anything that’s great … takes a long time.”
