Oscar-nominated actor Matt Dillon has signed on to portray Frank Stallone Sr., the father of Sylvester Stallone, in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming film ‘I Play Rocky.’ The film is directed by Peter Farrelly, exploring the behind-the-scenes story of the making of ‘Rocky,’ with Anthony Ippolito set to star as a young Sylvester Stallone.
Frank Stallone Sr. immigrated to the United States from Italy as a teenager and built a career as a hairdresser. Over the years, he established a network of barber shops, salons, and beauty schools along the East Coast. As detailed in ‘Sly,’ Netflix’s 2023 documentary about Sylvester Stallone, Frank Sr. was a complex figure — charming and industrious, yet also physically and emotionally abusive toward his son.
Despite their tumultuous relationship, Sylvester continually sought his father’s approval, even incorporating him into his creative work. Frank Sr. appeared in the original 1976 ‘Rocky’ as the timekeeper.
Written by Peter Gamble, ‘I Play Rocky’ tells the inspiring true story of an unknown actor determined to bring his vision to life. Convinced he was destined not only to write ‘Rocky’ but to star as Rocky Balboa himself, Stallone perseveres despite constant rejection. His refusal to compromise on playing the lead role results in one of cinema’s greatest underdog triumphs — both on and off the screen.
The cast also includes Stephan James as Carl Weathers, the actor who portrayed Apollo Creed — Rocky’s rival-turned-ally throughout the franchise. AnnaSophia Robb will play Sasha Czack, Stallone’s first wife. The film is being produced by Toby Emmerich and Christian Baha and will be released in theaters. FilmNation Entertainment is handling production services and international sales.
Dillon’s casting marks a return to a weighty dramatic role. He received an Academy Award nomination for his performance as LAPD officer John Ryan in Paul Haggis’ Best Picture-winning film ‘Crash.’ Over his career, Dillon has demonstrated his dramatic range in films like ‘The Outsiders,’ ‘Rumble Fish,’ and ‘Drugstore Cowboy.’
