After a round of press screenings and the lifting of the social media embargo on Monday night, first reactions to ‘The Final Reckoning’ are now surfacing online. These early impressions arrive just days ahead of the official critic reviews, which are scheduled to be released on Wednesday.

‘The Final Reckoning’ marks the eighth installment in Paramount Pictures’ long-running ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise and carries significant expectations, both for the studio and the domestic box office. According to a November 2024 report by The Hollywood Reporter, the film faced a lengthy and challenging production process, with costs nearing $400 million. Production delays, including setbacks caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, contributed to the ballooning budget, placing it among the most expensive films ever made.

Despite the franchise’s consistent popularity, the previous entry — 2023’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ — underperformed financially, grossing $566 million worldwide against a production budget close to $300 million, excluding marketing expenses.

Picking up a few months after the events of ‘Dead Reckoning,’ ‘The Final Reckoning’ follows Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team as they attempt to stop the deadly assassin Gabriel (Esai Morales) from seizing control of a rogue artificial intelligence known as “The Entity,” which poses a global threat.

The film also sees the return of several franchise veterans, including Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, Hayley Atwell, Henry Czerny, and Pom Klementieff.

The press screenings follow the film’s world premiere, held in Tokyo on May 5, and precede its high-profile debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14. ‘The Final Reckoning’ is set to open in theaters worldwide on May 23.
