‘Supergirl’ Box Office Tracking Falls Ahead of June 26 Release

Milly Alcock’s ‘Supergirl’ is heading toward a softer-than-expected box office launch ahead of its June 26 theatrical debut.
DC Studios’ new superhero universe is still trying to build momentum after 2025’s ‘Superman.’ That film introduced David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel and opened to $125 million domestically during its July 11-13 debut weekend.
By the end of its theatrical run, ‘Superman’ had earned $354.2 million in North America and $264 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $618.7 million. The movie also featured Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in a cameo and revealed that she is the owner of Krypto the Superdog. ‘Superman’ carried a $225 million production budget, plus another $125 million in marketing costs.
Nearly one year later, ‘Supergirl’ is arriving in theaters with significantly less buzz. In a June 4 tracking report, Deadline projected the film would open to $55 million domestically — less than half of Superman’s debut. A new update last Thursday suggested the outlook has slipped even further.
Puck News co-founder and former Hollywood Reporter editor Matthew Belloni wrote on X: “Pre-release tracking for SUPERGIRL has come down again, now sitting at $51M domestic for the 3-day opening, per NRG. SUPERMAN debuted to $125M last summer on much larger production and marketing budget.”
Although ‘Supergirl’ is not believed to have cost as much as ‘Superman,’ its price tag is still substantial for a superhero release. The film’s production budget was $175 million before marketing expenses. That figure is $25 million below the $200 million budget Forbes Australia reported in December — a number ‘Superman’ director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn later disputed on Threads, writing, “Not even a little bit true.”
