James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ (2025) is shaping up to be the most successful superhero films of the year, with its global box office performance already soaring past $430 million (as of Friday), rolling up to the weekend.
Updated numbers show an impressive $259.8 million domestically and $173 million internationally, making it the top-grossing superhero release of 2025 so far. Its domestic performance has outpaced both ‘Man of Steel’ (2013) and ‘Superman Returns’ (2006), signaling renewed enthusiasm for the iconic character under Gunn’s creative direction.
Industry analysts project that ‘Superman’ will end its box office run between $600 million and $650 million worldwide, with the slim possibility of reaching $700 million if its current sales momentum continues through the third weekend run. The film debuted with a domestic opening weekend of over $115 million and has maintained steady word-of-mouth, supported by an ‘A–’ CinemaScore and strong reviews. Although its international numbers, particularly in key markets like China and Europe, have been somewhat weaker than expected, its domestic strength has more than compensated, keeping the film on track for solid profitability.
With a reported production budget of $225 million and marketing costs estimated between $100–150 million, Warner Bros. is believed to need around $650 million globally for the film to break even. Even a conservative finish of $500–550 million would meet baseline studio expectations, but the film’s trajectory suggests a stronger performance closer to the mid-$600 million range. If it surpasses ‘Man of Steel’’s $670 million global total, ‘Superman’ will further solidify its position as a successful franchise relaunch for DC Studios.
The movie’s strong domestic hold and its early milestones reflect a major step forward for the DC Universe, now under the leadership of Gunn and producer Peter Safran. While competition from upcoming titles like Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ could affect its legs, ‘Superman’ has already proven to be a standout success in 2025’s box office.
