A24 is on track to break its own box office record again, with Kane Parsons’ ‘Backrooms’ expected to become the studio’s highest-grossing film ever this by Monday, passing Marty Supreme’s $191.2 million worldwide total.
The milestone comes despite a steep second-weekend drop in North America. Backrooms is projected to fall 68% to $25.7 million, bringing its domestic total to an estimated $134.8 million by tomorrow. Overseas, it had reached $50.3 million as of yesterday, with its global total expected to top $185 million by Sunday night.
When it passes ‘Marty Supreme,’ ‘Backrooms’ will have done so in just 10 or 11 days. By comparison, ‘Marty Supreme’ took 53 days to overtake A24’s previous record holder.
‘Backrooms’ had already become A24’s top domestic grosser earlier this week, passing ‘Marty Supreme’’s $96 million North American total in only six days. The result is especially impressive given its economics: the film cost under $10 million.
The film stars Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, and was produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, 21 Laps, and Phobos.
