The world has a full-blown ‘Obsession.’
Curry Barker’s breakout horror hit has blasted past $200 million worldwide, officially becoming Focus Features’ highest-grossing movie ever. Domestically, it had already claimed the studio crown, with $151 million and counting.
‘Obsession’ barely slowed down in its fourth weekend, slipping just 7 percent. Its $25.6 million haul set two horror records at once: the best fourth-weekend hold and the biggest fourth weekend ever for the genre.
Focus Features bought the film out of Toronto for about $15 million. At the time, no one could have predicted it would outrun the studio’s biggest past hits, including ‘Downton Abbey’ at $193.3 million, Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ at $181.8 million, ‘Burn After Reading’ at $164.3 million and Oscar winner ‘Darkest Hour’ at $150.3 million.
Barker made ‘Obsession’ independently for just $750,000 with a cast of unknowns. Before this, he was known for the horror short ‘The Chair,’ the free YouTube found-footage film ‘Milk & Serial’ and the sketch channel That’s a Bad Idea, which he runs with Cooper Tomlinson.
Now, he’s gone from indie horror creator to one of Hollywood’s hottest filmmakers. His follow-up, ‘Anything But Ghosts,’ is already shot, and he’s attached to direct a new ‘Texas Chainsaw’ movie for A24.
