Comedian Bill Burr is in negotiations to join the star-studded cast of ‘The Social Network Part II,’ the upcoming drama from Aaron Sorkin and Sony Pictures.
Sorkin, who won an Oscar for writing the original 2010 film, penned the new script and will direct. The project is based on Jeff Horwitz’s ‘Wall Street Journal’ investigative series, ‘The Facebook Files.’
The ensemble already includes Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, and Jeremy Strong, all of whom are finalizing their deals.
Unlike the first film, which chronicled the creation of Facebook (now Meta), the sequel will examine how internal research revealed the harmful effects the platform had on teenagers and children, its awareness of misinformation spreading and inciting violence, and its role in the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection.
The cast is portraying real figures central to these events: White takes on the role of reporter Jeff Horwitz, Madison plays data engineer-turned-whistleblower Frances Haugen, and Strong is set to embody Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Burr, however, is reportedly playing either a fictional character or a composite figure.
Production is scheduled to begin later this year in Vancouver, with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin, and Stuart Besser producing.
Burr, a Grammy- and Emmy-nominated stand-up comic and podcaster, has appeared in projects such as ‘The King of Staten Island,’ ‘Breaking Bad,’ and ‘The Mandalorian.’ He made his directorial debut with the 2023 Netflix comedy ‘Old Dads,’ which became the platform’s most-watched film worldwide during its first two weeks, earning 29.6 million views in just 10 days.
Earlier this year, Burr earned praise for his Broadway debut in ‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ performing alongside Kieran Culkin and Bob Odenkirk. He is also preparing to direct his next feature, ‘Born Losers,’ which he co-wrote and will star in while also serving as a producer.
