Jim Carrey and Ron Howard may be returning to Whoville.

Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to 2000’s ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’ the hit family film that grossed more than $350 million worldwide. Carrey is expected to reprise his role as the Grinch, while Howard is expected to return as director. Brian Grazer, Howard’s co-founder at Imagine, is also expected to produce.

Talks are still ongoing, and the project could fall through. But if it moves forward, the script will be written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel. The trio previously worked on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and contributed to another Dr. Seuss adaptation, ‘The Cat in the Hat.’

Carrey, one of the biggest stars of the 1990s and early 2000s, has been less active in recent years. He is set to return as Dr. Robotnik in 2027’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4.’ He has also said he would be open to playing the Grinch again, though he has noted that the original film’s heavy makeup was physically difficult and that motion capture could make a return easier.

‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ was later adapted into the 2018 animated film ‘The Grinch,’ released by Universal and Illumination Entertainment. It also became a major hit.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises CEO Susan Brandt will oversee the project for the company, while Britt Hennemuth and Christina Hoffrogge will oversee it for Universal.
