Emmy Award–winning actress Rachel Brosnahan, known for her work on ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ will make her feature directorial debut with a documentary examining the life and enduring legacy of her aunt, the late fashion visionary Kate Spade.

The project is being developed through a collaboration between Brosnahan’s production company, Scrap Paper Pictures, Fisher Stevens’ Highly Flammable, and Connor Schell’s Words + Pictures. Brosnahan will direct and serve as a producer, joined by Scrap Paper Pictures’ Jessie Jennison and Russell Kahn, along with producer Connor Schell of Words + Pictures. Executive producers include Fisher Stevens, Maura Anderson, and Zak Kilberg of Highly Flammable; Libby Geist and Alexa Conway of Words + Pictures; as well as Andy Spade.

Kate Spade, born in December 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri, rose to prominence as a fashion designer and entrepreneur. After beginning her career at Mademoiselle magazine, she identified a market need for handbags that were both functional and stylish. In 1993, she founded Kate Spade New York with her husband and business partner, Andy Spade, launching the brand with six initial handbag designs sold through a boutique. Over the next two decades, the company expanded into a global lifestyle brand offering handbags, accessories, apparel, home goods, and additional product lines.

In 1999, Spade sold a 56% stake in the company to Neiman Marcus, later selling her remaining shares in 2006. Although she died in 2018, her influence on contemporary fashion remains significant, and her designs continue to be widely celebrated.

Scrap Paper Pictures’ previous work includes the Tony-nominated Broadway revival of ‘The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window,’ Amazon Studios’ ‘I’m Your Woman,’ and two installments of ‘Yearly Departed’ for Amazon. In addition to her producing efforts, Brosnahan recently completed a notable year as an actress, appearing as Lois Lane in ‘Superman,’ and starring opposite Rami Malek in the 20th Century action-thriller ‘The Amateur.’ Upcoming projects include the ‘Superman’ sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Season 2 of Apple TV+’s ‘Presumed Innocent,’ and Netflix’s ‘Saturn Return.’
