Sony Pictures is once again turning its attention to ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ the action-crime franchise that began as a television series about three young women who trained at a police academy before becoming private investigators and later inspired a string of feature films.

The studio is developing a new movie based on the female-led property and has brought in screenwriter Pete Chiarelli to write the script. Chiarelli is best known for his work on the Ryan Reynolds–Sandra Bullock romantic comedy ‘The Proposal’ and for adapting ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’

Details about the producing team have not been confirmed.

‘Charlie’s Angels’ originally aired on ABC from 1976 to 1981. The crime drama became a pop culture phenomenon and helped launch the careers of its stars, Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith. It also cemented Aaron Spelling’s reputation as a major television producer. The show followed a group of highly capable female detectives working for the Townsend Agency, led by the mysterious and never-seen Charlie Townsend, with the affable Bosley acting as his liaison to the team.

Sony’s Columbia Pictures revived the property for the big screen in 2000 with a film directed by McG and starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. The movie was a major commercial success, earning $264.1 million worldwide (roughly $493 million in today’s dollars) and led to the 2003 sequel ‘Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.’

Attempts to relaunch the franchise have been mixed. A 2011 television reboot was canceled after just seven episodes. In 2019, Sony released another feature adaptation directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. That film expanded the story globally by portraying the Townsend Agency as an international security and intelligence network with teams around the world, but it ultimately underperformed at the box office.

The newly announced project remains in the early stages of development.
